Taylor Russell McKenzie, who was born in Vancouver on the 18th of July 1994, grew up in Toronto and Vancouver. Russell was born to a mother of both black and white parents. She grew up on her mom's side. Russell recalled how as a child she was rejected by her peers due to the colour of her skin. They struggled with financial issues. They were constantly on the move and had to move 16 times in an attempt to help support their father's work. Despite this adversity, Russell mentioned how in her early years "there always was a chance for re-invention, to make something new."As a child, Russell was already artistically inclined, at first, she was interested in pursuing a career in ballet and later to become a painter. Russell was just 18 when she started her first acting class. She borrowed money from her job to buy a car and drive to Los Angeles to audition. When the money ran out she would return to work until she earned enough money to be able to go back for another audition. This routine continued for four years until she got her first major TV appearance.
